L’Autre dans l’oeuvre dramatique de Bernard-Marie Koltès

The article addresses the problem of major importance in the dramatic work of Bernard- Marie Koltès - the problem of the Other. It shows the sources of the author’s interest in this theme, the importance of travel, the fascination with black people. A short analysis of the play Quai Ouest shows the role that Koltès attributes to the character of Abad (a black man), and the extent to which this character realises the image of the Other, of the Stranger, that will appear in the playwright’s other plays. The Night Just Before theWoods touches in an extraordinary way, also from the point of view of form, on the problem of otherness, but also that of solitude, desire, contact, love. The play In the Solitude of the Cotton Fields goes even further in presenting the frightening solitude of contemporary man who, unable to name his desire, turns to aggression and destruction. The article demonstrates the topicality of the problem of the Other, the Stranger, in today’s world.
