Kanoniczne dzieła literatury quebeckiej w języku polskim

The purpose of this analysis is to discuss the presence of Quebec literature in Poland, as well as to investigate into the issue of which Quebec texts are chosen for translation into Polish. The majority of Polish readers associate Canadian literature with Anglophone texts, ignoring the fact that the province of Quebec has its own distinctive culture and literature. According to Eugenia Sojka, Polish translations of Canadian literature contribute to the creation of specific images of Canada in Poland. Additionally, they take part in creating literary canon in the target literature. This phenomenon concerns both the Anglophone and Francophone Canadian texts chosen for translation into Polish (these usually belong to the canon of Canadian literature, have received numerous awards and have been translated into many languages). Consequently, the Polish reader gets to know Quebec literature mainly through novels - starting with the famous Maria Chapdelaine by Louis Hémon and A Season in the Life of Emmanuel by Marie-Claire Blais, through the important publications of the seventies (e.g. Agaguk by Yves Theriault, Kamouraska by Anne Hébert), up to the “néo-québécois” trend (represented by such writers as Dany Laferriere and Sergio Kokis) and the phenomenon of the “writing professors” (e.g. Gaétan Soucy, Louis Lefebvre). Quebec poetry and drama reach Polish readers through Polish literary magazines (such as Literatura na kwiecie or Dialog) and academic publications (e.g. Antologia poezji quebeckiej). Importantly, however, a significant number of noteworthy Quebec texts representing modern literary trends have not been translated into Polish (for instance, the “urban novel” or feminist writings). Concluding, Quebec literature in Poland is characterized by its passive, rather than active, presence, as it does not influence the target literature.
