The new role of libraries in the contemporary humanities

Definition of term: The aim of this article is to outline how the role of the library in the contemporary humanities has evolved. Originally, the library was an institution primarily focused on providing access to its traditional paper collections, whereas today the library is a multifunctional, innovative, and flexible institution that provides a variety of services, workshops, and training on how to use traditional and digital resources. Historical analysis of the term: The library has changed significantly over the last 30 years, both technologically and conceptually. These changes have been caused by the digitisation of collections, new technologies, the development of new services, and the spread of databases. Discussion of the term: Libraries undertake new activities in order to meet the expectations of the contemporary humanities. These include the digitisation of collections, the creation of databases, publishing activities, workshops and training, data preparation and analysis, documentation activities, and more. Systematic reflection with conclusions and recommendations: While libraries are committed to meeting the everchanging needs and expectations of researchers, they should be more committed to the process of collaboration and more widely promote the opportunities offered by contemporary sources, databases, and tools.
